Why a Mexican notebook is a paper-object with a regulatory layer
A notebook given to a board member at a Mexican corporate carries more paperwork than the t-shirt in the same welcome kit. The paper itself has to be sourced from an FSC-certified mill if the buyer is going to use the "FSC paper" claim in their ESG report; the chain-of-custody has to travel with the shipment and the FSC logo has to be printed on the inside back cover. The vegan-leather or PU cover has to comply with NOM-050 if the buyer is going to claim "no animal-derived materials"; the chrome-tanned leather cover has to carry the importer's RFC and country-of-origin label. And the hot-foil logo has to be applied with a low-VOC adhesive to keep the buyer's VOC inventory clean.
The other thing that makes a notebook a different object is the use case. The A5 hardcover vegan-leather notebook is used at the boardroom table for 3–5 years; it lives in a briefcase and is replaced when it fills. The A4 casebound cream-paper notebook is used at the supplier-recognition meeting and lives on a shelf as a reference object. The B6 softcover dot-grid notebook is used daily by an engineer or designer; it lasts 3–6 months and gets reordered. The A5 spiral-bound recycled-kraft notebook is a giveaway that gets used for a few weeks and then either stays in a drawer or gets recycled. The paper weight, the binding, the cover material and the decoration all follow from which use case the notebook is serving.

Decoration, paper and where they are made
Decoration follows the same logic as the rest of the line, with one twist: the notebook has multiple decoration surfaces and they do not all take the same technique. Hot foil (the metallic gold, silver or copper foil pressed onto the cover) is the premium decoration and works on PU, vegan-leather and fabric covers. Debossing (the recessed, blind impression on the cover) works on leather, vegan leather and heavy PU. Screen print is the workhorse and works on virtually any cover. UV print handles photorealistic designs on PU and fabric covers. Embroidery is reserved for the fabric-bound notebooks and runs at a premium.
Paper is the most-negotiated parameter. Standard 80 gsm wood-free paper is the entry line. 90–100 gsm cream or ivory paper is the premium line, with a heavier hand-feel and a more substantial writing surface. 100–120 gsm FSC-certified paper is the ESG-aligned line, with the chain-of-custody document and the FSC logo on the inside back cover. Recycled 80 gsm kraft paper is the giveaway line, with a slightly textured surface and a tan colour. We work with paper mills in Jalisco, State of Mexico and Puebla.
