Interviews with people who buy merch in Mexico

Suppliers describe the process from the inside. Buyers describe it from the budget meeting, which is a different process entirely. These three interviews are with people who plan, approve and receive corporate merchandise in Mexico, asked about the parts of the job that do not appear in a proposal: how they decide a supplier is finished, what they stopped ordering, and how they handle a delivery that arrives wrong.

What the interviews cover

Each conversation follows the same arc: how the person ended up owning merchandise, what the budget cycle looks like from their side, which decisions they now make differently, and what advice they would give someone inheriting the same job. The questions are deliberately specific. “How do you feel about merch?” tells you nothing; “what do you do when a truck is late?” tells you everything.

The interviews are published as written exchanges rather than summaries. Where an answer is unflattering to the industry, it is left in, because the readers of this page are the people who have to make a decision with incomplete information.

Questions that recur across all three

  • Approval. Who signs, and how many signatures a merchandise order actually needs.
  • Budget cycle. When the money is committed, and how late a decision can be without losing the date.
  • Supplier continuity. What makes a buyer move, and how long a transition takes.
  • Samples. How many are ordered, and whether anyone reads the difference between them.
  • Delivery failure. What is done when a shipment is late, short or damaged.
  • What stopped. The items or formats each of them deliberately stopped ordering.
