Active noise cancellation and why it matters
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) works by capturing ambient sound with microphones, generating an inverse wave and playing it in the earbud to cancel the original wave. The result is silence — open-office silence, plane silence, public-transport silence, home-with-kids silence. For hybrid work, ANC lets an employee participate in a video conference from a noisy Polanco café without the client hearing the background. For call-centre operators, ANC reduces auditory fatigue and improves concentration. For corporate travellers, ANC turns a Mexico City to Monterrey flight into productive time.
We run three ANC levels. The first is passive — the isolation the physical seal of the earbud provides in the ear canal, without electronics. Sufficient for moderate environments. The second is hybrid ANC — external microphones that capture ambient noise and cancel it, effective on low frequencies (plane engine, HVAC). Charging case and battery life
The charging case is what makes TWS practical. The case charges the earbuds when not in use, and the case itself charges via USB-C or Qi wireless charging. Battery life off the case runs 4 to 10 hours depending on whether ANC is on, and the case adds 16 to 30 additional hours before needing its own recharge. For corporate programs, minimum acceptable battery life is 6 hours per earbud with the case — enough for a full work shift with midday top-ups.
Qi wireless charging of the case is an important differentiator for premium programs — the recipient can drop the case on a charging pad on their desk and forget about cables. For B2B programs with technical recipients, fast charge is the differentiator — 10 minutes of charging gives 1 to 2 hours of use, useful when the employee forgot to charge and has a call in 15 minutes. Standard USB-C is sufficient for most programs; the wireless charging version raises the unit cost 15 to 25 percent but communicates quality.
Audio quality and codecs
The Bluetooth codec determines the audio quality the earbud can reproduce. SBC is the universal codec, present in all Bluetooth devices, with acceptable quality for voice and casual music. AAC is the Apple-preferred codec — better quality than SBC, with no perceptible delay on video. aptX and aptX HD are Qualcomm codecs — better music quality, low latency for gaming. LDAC is the Sony codec — CD-near quality over Bluetooth streaming, requires a compatible device. For corporate programs with primary use of calls and video conference, SBC or AAC are sufficient; for programs where the recipient will use the earbuds for music and high-quality audio, aptX or LDAC justify the extra spend.
The dynamic driver — the speaker inside the earbud — determines frequency response and sound quality. 6 to 8 mm drivers are standard on compact TWS; 10 to 13 mm drivers enter on formats with better bass response. For over-ear, drivers run 30 to 50 mm with frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Impedance, sensitivity and total harmonic distortion are metrics that matter to audiophiles; for corporate programs we verify the earbud has wide frequency response and distortion below 1 percent THD. Balanced armature drivers — multiple miniaturised drivers per ear — enter only on truly audiophile programs and lift the price 3 to 5 times.
