The Tonalá ceramic district and the Mexican ceramic tradition

Tonalá, Jalisco is one of the principal ceramic centres of Mexico. The district has produced painted and burnished ceramics since pre-Hispanic times, and the modern workshops carry the tradition forward with high-fire stoneware, low-fire earthenware and the iconic Tonalá-style painted pieces. For corporate-gift programs the Tonalá workshops handle the C-level executive-gift program with hand-painted or hand-burnished finish, signed by the artisan. For volume programs the Mexican-made white-mug industry in Jalisco, Guanajuato and Estado de México produces 200,000+ mugs per day and is the default for the trade-show and corporate-rollout mug.

The Mexican ceramic mug industry operates under NOM-002 (labelling of ceramic ware for food contact), NOM-010 (lead and cadmium release limits for ceramic ware) and LFPCA consumer-protection rules. Every mug that we ship is manufactured to NOM-010 lead-release standards and includes the NOM-002 food-contact declaration on the packaging. The Tonalá artisan-ware variants are hand-painted and tested for lead and cadmium release before shipping.

Decoration, packaging and finishing

Sublimation is the workhorse decoration for the full-colour photographic congress artwork and the family-photo corporate-gift mug. The sublimation coating is dishwasher-safe to 200+ cycles; beyond that, the print starts to fade. For trade-show giveaways and high-volume programs that are designed for replacement rather than lifetime use, sublimation is the cost-effective choice.

Screen print handles 1–4 spot-colour logos on the standard white-mug and the Guanajuato stoneware formats. The screen-print ink is dishwasher-safe to 500+ cycles; beyond that, the print starts to fade. For corporate-logo mug programs that need lifetime use, screen print is the right decoration.

Hand-painting is reserved for the Tonalá artisan variants. Each piece is signed by the artisan and carries a unique pattern within the brand brief. For executive-gift programs we recommend a 25 to 50-piece run with two or three pattern variants to give the gift set visual interest. The hand-painted mugs ship in a rigid two-piece gift box with hot-stamped corporate logo, magnetic closure and fabric lining.
