Woven patches for fine detail, photo-like reproduction and premium apparel

Woven patches are the technique that closes the gap between embroidery and print. Instead of stitching over a substrate, woven patches weave the entire surface from polyester yarn on a Jacquard loom — the design is the weave. That means fine type below 4 mm stays legible, gradients and subtle colour transitions reproduce faithfully, and the patch reads with a flat surface that photographs cleanly under retail and e-commerce lights. For premium apparel, hospitality labels and corporate identity that needs to read premium without the bulk of embroidery, woven patches are the answer.

Where woven patches earn their place

Woven patches are the right call when the artwork is too fine for embroidery. Type below 4 mm, hairlines below 1 mm, intricate monograms, photographic detail — these all collapse into a textured mess under embroidery thread but reproduce cleanly when woven. The technique is also the right call when the patch must sit flat against the garment. A woven patch has no raised thread pile, no merrowed border required, and the laser-cut edge seals the perimeter without adding bulk.

The technique is widely used as the main brand label sewn into the neck of a premium polo or the inside placket of an oxford shirt. It is also used as a sewn-on external label on hospitality textiles (spa robes, premium towels, bedding), on corporate blazers and on the inside pocket of a leather bag. The technique does not replace embroidered patches for the raised-texture look that tactical apparel wants — that is a different aesthetic — but it replaces direct embroidery on the garment when the customer wants a removable, transferable brand asset.

Recurring applications across Mexican corporate programmes

Premium apparel labels

Inside-neck labels for premium polos, dress shirts and knitwear. Woven with the brand mark, care instructions and country of origin in three languages. Folded and tacked, sewn flat or heat-sealed depending on the garment construction.

Hospitality and spa textiles

Corner labels for hotel robes, spa towels, premium bedding and pool towels. The label carries the brand identity in two or three languages and survives the industrial laundry cycle that hospitality uses.

Corporate identity and blazer badges

External woven labels for blazers, suit carriers, leather briefcases and premium backpacks. Often paired with a leather patch, embossed plate or engraved metal plate as a layered brand identity.

Limited-edition and event collectibles

Woven patches as collectibles for music festivals, sports events and brand anniversaries. Sold at retail or included in VIP kits. The flat photographic surface photographs well for social media and is easier to pack than an embroidered patch.

The woven-patch production flow

The artwork is converted to a pixel map that drives the Jacquard loom — each pixel of the artwork is one weft insertion of yarn. The loom weaves the design into a continuous tape of polyester yarn; multiple patches are laid out on the same tape with weave marks indicating the cut lines. Weave density is set per artwork: 100 threads per centimetre for fine photographic reproduction, 60 threads per centimetre for bold graphic logos, 80 threads per centimetre as the standard middle ground.

After weaving, the tape is hot-cut or laser-cut into individual patches. Laser cutting seals the edge and produces clean curves without fraying; hot cutting is faster and adequate for rectangular patches. The backing is applied last: sew-on (no backing), iron-on (heat-seal adhesive), or self-adhesive for one-off application. For apparel labels the patch is folded and tack-sewn so it can be inserted into a garment seam.

MOQ, pricing and delivery

The cost-effective MOQ starts at 200 patches for woven patches — the loom setup is the same regardless of run length, but below 200 the per-piece share of the setup is too high. The unit price drops clearly at 500, 1,000, 2,500 and 5,000 pieces. We quote per patch per size per weave density, with the artwork setup amortised over the run.

Lead time is 14 to 21 business days standard for a new artwork, including the woven sample for sign-off. Re-runs of an existing file are 10 to 14 business days. Quotes are in MXN ex-IVA, 16% IVA itemised on a CFDI 4.0 stamped by SAT against your RFC. For hospitality chains with annual replenishment we offer a blanket PO and call-off orders at the locked-in price.

FAQ — woven patches in Mexico

How thin can the type be?

Down to 4 pt for sans-serif fonts and 5 pt for serif fonts with thin strokes. Below that the yarn cannot carry the shape and the type starts to fill in. For type below 4 pt, dye-sublimated labels are the better answer.

How many colours can the patch carry?

Up to 8 colours in the design. The yarn is dyed before weaving, so each colour is a separate yarn loaded into the loom. More colours add loom setup time and slow the weave.

Does the woven patch survive industrial washing?

Yes. Polyester yarn is colourfast and the laser-cut edge does not fray. Woven patches survive 100+ industrial laundry cycles at 70 °C without fading or edge deterioration.

What is the difference between woven and embroidered?

Embroidered patches have a raised thread texture — the design is stitched on top of a twill substrate. Woven patches have a flat surface — the design is the weave itself. Embroidered patches read as bold and tactical; woven patches read as flat and premium.

Can you match a specific Pantone?

Yes. Polyester yarn is dyed to Pantone-coated references. Custom colour matching has a one-time dye-lot fee per colour and adds 2 to 3 weeks to the lead time.
