UV printing on metal, acrylic, plastic, wood and glass — full-colour on rigid substrates

Direct UV printing is the technique that closes the gap between what screen printing and pad printing can carry on rigid substrates and what the brand actually wants to print. Where screen printing is constrained to a small number of spot Pantone colours per pass and pad printing cannot reach photographic gradients, UV printing lays down CMYK, white and clear varnish in a single pass with photo-grade resolution. The ink is cured instantly by a UV-LED lamp as it is deposited, so it adheres to almost any rigid substrate — coated and uncoated aluminium, clear and coloured acrylic, ABS and polycarbonate plastic, MDF and natural wood, glass and ceramic. The result is a print that is scratch-resistant, fade-resistant and chemically bonded to the surface. Used for corporate awards and trophies in CDMX, hotel signage and room numbers in Riviera Maya and Los Cabos, real-estate closing gifts in Monterrey, industrial nameplates and control panels in Querétaro's manufacturing corridor, restaurant menus and bar coasters, and event branding across the country.

Where UV printing earns its place

UV printing is the right call when the substrate is rigid and the artwork is full-colour. An aluminium plaque that needs to carry a logo, a recipient name, a date and a corporate motto in one print is a UV-printing brief. An acrylic trophy with a corporate logo on a coloured body that needs to read with photographic clarity is a UV-printing brief. A control panel for an industrial machine that needs a logo and serial-number text on a powder-coated metal surface is a UV-printing brief. A wooden menu cover for a restaurant that needs the menu of the day printed edge-to-edge is a UV-printing brief.

The technique is not the right call for soft substrates or textiles — those need different machinery and chemistry. For garments, sublimation, screen printing, DTF, DTG and heat transfer are the workhorses. For packaging and labels, digital printing and flexo are the workhorses. UV printing earns its place on rigid substrates where the print has to last, look sharp and carry the full colour palette of the brand without the cost of multiple screen passes.

Recurring applications across Mexican corporate programmes

Corporate awards and recognition plaques

UV-printed aluminium, acrylic or wood plaques for sales-recognition awards, service-anniversary milestones and board welcome presentations. Full-colour logos, individual recipient names and dates, corporate motto. White-ink underbase on clear acrylic for the floating-text effect. From 25 pieces, 7 to 10 business days, from MXN 220 per piece before IVA at 100 units.

Industrial nameplates and control panels

UV-printed aluminium or polycarbonate plates for industrial equipment, machine serial labels, electrical control panels and asset tags. The print carries barcodes, QR codes and individual serial numbers applied directly to the substrate. Resistant to solvents, abrasion and outdoor UV exposure. From 100 pieces, 5 to 10 business days, from MXN 45 per piece before IVA at 500 units.

Hospitality signage and room identifiers

UV-printed acrylic or aluminium room numbers, suite identifiers and wayfinding signs for hotels in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. Full-colour brand identity, multilingual text where required, raised clear varnish for the tactile finish. Weather-resistant for outdoor applications. From 50 pieces, 7 to 12 business days, from MXN 95 per piece before IVA at 200 units.

Restaurant menus, coasters and bar mats

UV-printed wood, acrylic or composite substrates for restaurant menus of the day, branded coasters and bar service mats. Photographic food reproduction, edge-to-edge printing, raised varnish for the high-touch surface. From 100 pieces, 7 to 12 business days, from MXN 38 per piece before IVA at 500 units.

The UV print process and the role of white ink

The UV print process runs CMYK as standard, with white and clear varnish as additional channels. The printhead deposits ink droplets onto the substrate; the UV-LED lamp mounted on the print carriage cures each drop the instant it lands. The chemistry is solvent-free, which makes the technique suitable for indoor environments and food-adjacent applications where VOC emissions are a concern.

White ink is what makes UV printing work on dark and transparent substrates. On a clear acrylic plaque, the white ink is laid down first as an underbase, the CMYK is printed on top, and the clear varnish seals the surface. The result is a print that reads correctly against any background colour. On brushed aluminium, the white underbase is usually omitted and the print sits directly on the metal. On coloured plastic or wood, the white underbase is calibrated to the substrate colour to keep the printed artwork accurate.

Clear varnish is the third channel and the one that makes UV-printed pieces feel premium. A spot varnish layer can be laid on top of part of the print to create a raised, tactile accent — the logo or a key element is varnished while the rest of the print is flat. A flood varnish seals the entire print surface and adds a uniform gloss that improves scratch and chemical resistance.

MOQ, pricing and delivery

The cost-effective MOQ starts at 25 pieces for awards and plaques, 100 pieces for industrial nameplates, 50 pieces for hospitality signage. Below these thresholds the per-piece share of printer setup and substrate preparation is too high. The unit price drops clearly at 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 pieces. The price is driven by print area, substrate cost, white-ink coverage and varnish complexity.

Lead time is 5 to 10 business days standard for repeat jobs with established artwork, 7 to 12 business days for new artwork with colour matching and white-ink calibration. Quotes are in MXN ex-IVA, 16% IVA itemised on a CFDI 4.0 stamped by SAT against your RFC. For corporate accounts with annual replenishment we offer a blanket PO and call-off orders at the locked-in price. If the shipment crosses the border under an IMMEX operation we issue the invoice with the comercio exterior complemento and attach a copy of the pedimento.

FAQ — UV printing in Mexico

What substrates can be UV-printed?

Coated and uncoated aluminium, clear and coloured acrylic, ABS and polycarbonate plastic, MDF and natural wood, glass and ceramic, coated steel and composite panels. Flexible substrates like leather and fabric need different machinery.

Is UV printing durable outdoors?

Yes. The cured ink is chemically bonded to the substrate and is resistant to UV exposure, abrasion, solvents and household chemicals. For permanent outdoor applications we recommend a substrate with its own outdoor rating (anodised aluminium, UV-stable acrylic) and the print sealed with a flood varnish.

Can UV printing reproduce a Pantone colour exactly?

CMYK UV printing cannot reproduce every Pantone spot colour exactly — the gamut is wider than CMYK. For brand-critical logos we print the Pantone as a separate spot layer when the substrate and budget allow; otherwise we match to the closest CMYK build and provide a visual proof for sign-off.

How fast is UV printing for short runs?

5 to 10 business days for repeat jobs with established artwork. Same-day or next-day turnaround is possible for urgent small-format awards and plaques, subject to machine availability and a rush surcharge of 30 to 50%.

What is the maximum print area?

Standard flatbed UV printers cover up to 60 × 90 cm in a single pass; larger pieces are tiled or printed in sections. For industrial production runs we run roll-to-roll UV hybrid machines that handle longer pieces.
