UV DTF transfers for full-colour artwork on tumblers, glass, ceramic and curved hard goods
UV DTF is the technique that filled the gap pad printing never quite closed. The artwork prints on a PET film using UV-cured pigment ink that hardens on contact with the LED lamp; a second adhesive layer prints on a release liner; the two films laminate together and the finished decal is peeled and applied to the substrate by hand — no heat press, no screen, no cliché. The technique handles full-colour artwork with gradients, white underbase, metallic accents and photographic reproduction on substrates that resist screen printing and reject sublimation: stainless steel, anodised aluminium, glass, ceramic, acrylic and finished wood.
Where UV DTF replaces the alternatives
UV DTF is the right call when the substrate is hard, the surface is finished, and the artwork is full colour with gradients. The classic case is a stainless-steel tumbler with a full-colour brand illustration wrapped around the body — pad printing would need four colours and lose the gradient, sublimation needs a polyester coating, vinyl wraps feel cheap. UV DTF prints the design on a transfer film, the film is laminated with adhesive, and the decal sticks to the curved steel with the same visual fidelity as a paper print.
The technique also handles glass and ceramic — wine glasses, carafes, ceramic mugs, glass awards — without the firing step that high-temperature ceramic inks need. It sticks to acrylic, finished wood and finished leatherette, which is why premium packaging suppliers use it for branded boxes and presentation trays. The technique does not handle flexible substrates (apparel, fabric bags) and does not survive industrial dishwasher cycles; for the gift-once, hand-wash-recommended reality of a corporate giveaway it is the technique that delivers the most visual punch.
Recurring applications across Mexican corporate programmes
Beverware and drinkware
Full-colour wraps on stainless-steel tumblers, aluminium bottles, glass carafes and ceramic mugs. The decal handles the compound curve of a tumbler and lays flat without bubbles when applied with the squeegee we supply. Hand-wash recommended; the decal survives 200+ cycles of normal hand washing.
Crystal and glass awards
Full-colour logos and personalisation on crystal awards for sales kick-offs, retirement ceremonies and board recognition. The decal applies to the curved or faceted glass surface and is invisible as a separate layer once transferred.
Premium packaging and gift boxes
Full-colour artwork on rigid setup boxes, magnetic-closure gift boxes and presentation trays. UV DTF reproduces the brand identity on textured and patterned substrates that foil stamping cannot reach, at a fraction of the setup cost of four-colour offset.
Electronics accessories and small appliances
Brand marks on Bluetooth speakers, power-bank housings, charging pads, mini-fridges and aroma diffusers. For Tijuana and Juárez maquila clients we receive the finished goods from the IMMEX plant, apply the decal in our workshop and return them with the artwork batch.
The UV DTF production flow
The artwork prints on a transparent PET film using a UV-LED printer with CMYK + white + varnish channels. White prints first where the substrate is dark or coloured, then CMYK on top, and an optional varnish channel prints a clear protective coat over the artwork for additional abrasion resistance. Each pass cures instantly under the LED lamp, which means the printer can stack colours without waiting for drying.
A second film — the carrier — runs through an adhesive printer that lays down a pressure-sensitive adhesive in the same artwork footprint. The two films laminate together in a roll-to-roll laminator, the adhesive binds to the artwork side, and the printed decal is wound onto a take-up roll. To apply, the operator cuts the decal to size, peels the backing, presses it to the substrate and squeegees out the air. No heat, no water, no press — the bond is pressure-activated.
MOQ, pricing and delivery
The cost-effective MOQ starts at 25 pieces for UV DTF — the film-print setup is the same whether the run is 25 or 250, so small runs are affordable. Below that, pad printing is the better fit. The unit price drops clearly at 100, 250 and 500 pieces. We quote by print size and volume; the film and adhesive cost is prorated across the pieces.
Lead time is 5 to 7 business days standard, including 24 hours for adhesive cure. Express 3 to 4 days is available with a +30% surcharge. Quotes are in MXN ex-IVA, 16% IVA itemised on a CFDI 4.0 stamped by SAT against your RFC. For cross-border shipments under an IMMEX operation we issue the invoice with the comercio exterior complemento and reference the pedimento. We can also quote and invoice in USD on request for direct-ship maquila programmes.
FAQ — UV DTF printing in Mexico
What is the maximum decal size?
Up to 30 cm × 60 cm in a single pass, suitable for wrapping a tumbler or covering the lid of a presentation box. Larger artwork is split into multiple decals and registered on the substrate.
Does UV DTF survive the dishwasher?
Hand-wash only. The decal survives 200+ cycles of normal hand washing. Industrial dishwasher detergents and high-temperature cycles will lift the decal at the edges; we mark every piece with a hand-wash icon as standard.
Can it apply to textured or curved surfaces?
Yes, including compound curves (a tumbler body), convex surfaces (a mug handle) and lightly textured substrates (a brushed-aluminium flask). Deep textures and sharp edges lift the decal and should be evaluated in a physical sample.
How does it compare to vinyl wrapping?
Vinyl is single-colour or printed with solvent ink and shows a visible edge. UV DTF lays flat, has no visible edge, and reproduces photographic detail. Vinyl is cheaper per square metre; UV DTF is the premium call.
Do you print the substrate or only the decal?
Both. We can supply the printed decal ready to apply if your workshop handles finishing, or apply it in-house if you supply the blank. Many maquila clients send us finished goods from their Tijuana or Juárez plant for application and repacking.
Request a UV DTF quote
Send us the substrate (stainless steel, aluminium, glass, ceramic, acrylic), quantity, artwork size and deadline. If you have a PNG or TIFF at 200 DPI or higher, attach it; if not, we will quote against a description and refine at the proof stage.
