Pad printing for promotional hard goods, electronics and curved substrates

Pad printing — tampografía in Spanish — is the technique that solves the problem no flatbed printer can. A laser-etched cliché holds the ink, a soft silicone pad picks it up, and the same pad presses it onto the surface of the object, even when that surface is curved, recessed or textured. The technique is the workhorse of the Tijuana maquila corridor: pen barrels, USB sticks, power-bank housings, Bluetooth speakers, medical-device buttons, automotive key fobs. When the corporate giveaway programme includes hard goods from an IMMEX supplier, pad printing is the call that lets the logo ride on the same surface the factory is already producing.

Where pad printing earns its place

Pad printing is the right answer when the substrate is not flat — pens, lighters, golf balls, water bottles, mugs with handles, headphones, remote controls, USB drives, dog-tag shapes. It is also the right answer when the print area is tiny but the artwork needs to stay legible — a 6 mm logo on a syringe barrel, a 10 mm serial number on a metal connector, a brand mark on the side of a power bank next to a USB-C port. The technique handles rigid plastic, glass, ceramic, metal, painted surfaces and finished wood with the same setup, with only the ink chemistry changing.

It is the wrong answer when the artwork carries a gradient, a photograph or more than four colours. Pad printing prints solid spot colours from a separate cliché for each one, and registration drift grows with every colour added. For full-colour artwork on a curved surface, UV DTF or wrap labels are the better call. For apparel, pad printing does not apply — the substrate is too soft and too absorbent for the silicone pad to release a clean image.

Recurring applications across Mexican corporate programmes

Tijuana maquila giveaway kits

Branded pens, USB drives, keychains and notebooks that ship alongside electronics manufactured under IMMEX programmes. Single-colour or two-colour pad printing on injection-moulded parts and finished accessories, packed into bilingual cartons at the maquila before cross-border dispatch.

Beverware and drinkware

One- to four-colour logos on stainless-steel tumblers, aluminium bottles, glass carafes and ceramic mugs. The pad follows the curve so the print sits evenly around the body. We pair it with laser engraving on the lid for a layered brand effect.

Automotive and medical components

Pad printing of part numbers, batch codes and brand marks on automotive key fobs in Saltillo and SLP, on medical-device buttons in Juárez maquila plants, and on instrument cluster overlays. Permanent two-component ink survives solvents, IPA and autoclave cycles.

Event and trade-show kits

Single- or two-colour logo on a curated set — pen, keychain, bottle-opener, mini torch, sticky-note holder — packed in a printed carton and delivered to WTC CDMX, Expo Guadalajara or Centro Citibanamex with no minimum order per item.

How the pad-printing process actually works

The artwork is separated by spot colour, each colour is output as a film and exposed onto a photopolymer cliché inside a UV frame. The cliché sits in an inkwell flooded with the chosen ink; a doctor blade wipes the surface clean leaving ink only in the etched artwork. A silicone pad descends onto the cliché, picks up the inked image, slides over to the part and presses down — that single stamp is what produces the print.

The pad geometry is the hidden craft. Hard silicone pads carry fine detail on small, flat surfaces. Soft silicone pads wrap around compound curves. Long thin pads reach into narrow recesses. We keep an inventory of fifteen pad profiles and pick per job rather than improvising. For a four-colour job the four clichés are mounted on a rotating carousel that prints each colour in sequence with oven curing between stations; cycle time is two to four seconds per piece depending on size.

MOQ, pricing and delivery

The cost-effective MOQ starts at 100 pieces for pad printing — the cliché setup is the same whether the run is 100 or 1000, so small runs pay a higher per-piece share. The unit price drops clearly at 250, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 pieces. We quote per colour, per piece, with the cliché cost amortised over the run; for re-orders we keep the cliché on file for 24 months at no charge.

Lead time is 7 to 10 business days standard for an order that supplies the blanks; if the customer supplies blanks from a Tijuana or Juárez maquila we accept delivery at our workshop in the Zona Industrial and run the print on a 5-day cycle. Express line 4 to 5 days with a +40% surcharge. Quotes are in MXN ex-IVA, 16% IVA itemised on a CFDI 4.0 stamped by SAT against your RFC. For cross-border shipments under an IMMEX operation we issue the invoice with the comercio exterior complemento and reference the pedimento.

FAQ — pad printing in Mexico

How many colours can pad printing reproduce?

Up to four in a single carousel. More colours mean more stations, longer cycle time, and registration drift that grows visibly past four. For full-colour artwork on a curved hard surface, UV DTF or a wrap label is the better fit.

What is the smallest print area pad printing handles?

Down to roughly 6 mm diameter with the hard-pad profile. Type below 5 pt is risky because ink transfer on silicone pads smears the smallest positive features.

Does pad printing work on finished electronic devices?

Yes, with the right ink. We use two-component inks that cure at room temperature and resist IPA, sunscreen and hand-oil. Pre-production we always run a 10-piece adhesion test on the actual housing, not a substitute.

Can you print on round objects with a handle?

Yes, with a multi-axis jig that holds the mug by the handle and rotates the body under the pad. Cycle time is longer and the per-piece cost goes up roughly 30%.

Do you ship blanks back if the maquila owns them?

Yes, we receive the maquila's blanks, print them and return them with a packing list that reconciles to the original manifest. Cross-border handoff under IMMEX happens at the maquila's designated customs broker.

Request a pad-printing quote

Send us the item reference, quantity, number of print colours, and the deadline. If you already have a sample of the part, attach a photo with a ruler in frame so we can pick the right pad profile and quote accordingly.
