Heated die · metallic or pigmented foil · permanent bond

Foil stamping for the metallic accents that read premium on paper, leather and PU

Foil stamping is the technique that puts a metallic or pigmented foil onto a substrate with heat and pressure. A magnesium or brass die, engraved with the artwork, is heated to a calibrated temperature; a foil carrier sheet sits between the die and the substrate; the press closes, the heat activates the adhesive on the back of the foil layer, the foil bonds to the substrate in the shape of the artwork, and the carrier sheet is stripped away. The result is a metallic accent — gold, silver, copper, holographic or pigmented — that catches the light and reads as premium on a business card, a notebook cover, the spine of a presentation folder or the lid of a gift box.

Where foil stamping earns its place

Foil stamping is the right call when the brand identity needs a metallic or pigmented accent that does not look like ink. CMYK printing can simulate metallic with a silver ink + colour overlay, but the result reads as flat — it does not catch the light the way real foil does. Foil stamping uses an actual metal layer, so the mark shifts in appearance as the viewing angle changes. That is why corporate stationery programmes, premium spirits packaging, luxury retail boxes and invitation suites use foil stamping as the finishing signature.

The technique works on paper from 200 GSM up, on PU and genuine leather, on linen and felt bookbinding cloth, on coated and uncoated card. It does not work on textured substrates where the die cannot reach the recessed fibres, and it does not work on heat-sensitive plastics that deform under the press temperature. For those substrates, metallic ink, metallic vinyl or UV DTF are the better alternatives.

Recurring applications across Mexican corporate programmes

Executive stationery and business cards

Gold or silver foil on 600 GSM cotton business cards, letterhead and presentation folders. Often combined with blind emboss for a layered relief + metallic finish. Common in law firms, private banking and C-suite corporate identity.

Premium spirits and luxury packaging

Foil stamping on rigid setup boxes for tequila, mezcal, whisky and perfume. Gold foil on black or deep-coloured stock is the standard; holographic foil for limited editions and seasonal packaging. Combined with embossing for the layered premium cue.

Notebooks, planners and leatherette covers

Cover foil on PU and leatherette A5 notebooks, ring planners and guest books. The die is calibrated to the cover thickness so the foil sits evenly without bleeding at the edges. Common in CDMX financial-services gifting.

Wedding and event stationery

Foil-stamped invitation suites, menu cards, place cards and seating charts. Gold, silver and rose-gold foils on cotton stock or vellum. The mark sets the tone for a premium event before the doors open.

The foil-stamping production flow

The artwork is converted to a single-colour vector and engraved into a magnesium die (for short runs of paper) or a brass die (for long runs and for leather). The die is mounted on a heated platen on a clamshell or roll-leaf press. The substrate is positioned on the lower platen; a sheet of foil carrier is fed between the die and the substrate.

The press closes with calibrated heat (typically 100 to 130 °C) and pressure (typically 8 to 15 kg/cm²) for a dwell time of 0.5 to 2 seconds depending on the substrate and foil. The heat activates the adhesive layer on the back of the foil; the pressure bonds the foil to the substrate; the carrier sheet is stripped away by the take-up spool, leaving the foil layer adhered in the artwork shape. Cycle time is 2 to 5 seconds per piece for flat stamping; for cylinder presses on continuous stock the throughput is much higher.

MOQ, pricing and delivery

The cost-effective MOQ starts at 250 pieces for foil stamping on business cards and at 100 pieces for notebook covers. The die cost is one-time per artwork and re-runs of the same die carry no setup fee. We keep dies on file for 36 months; after that the die is returned to the customer or scrapped on request.

Lead time is 10 to 14 business days standard for a new die, including the physical proof on the actual substrate. Re-runs from an existing die are 5 to 7 business days. Quotes are in MXN ex-IVA, 16% IVA itemised on a CFDI 4.0 stamped by SAT against your RFC. For stationery programmes with annual replenishment we offer a blanket PO and call-off orders at the locked-in price.

FAQ — foil stamping in Mexico

What foil colours are available?

The standard range covers gold, silver, copper, rose gold, holographic and a wide selection of pigmented foils (red, blue, green, black, white). Custom colour matching is available with a one-time dye-lot fee; delivery is 2 to 3 weeks.

What is the maximum foil area?

Up to 30 cm × 40 cm on a platen press. Larger artwork is split into multiple foil stations and registered. For business cards and notebook covers the common working area is 10 cm × 15 cm.

Can foil stamping combine with embossing?

Yes. The combined emboss + foil stamp uses a sculptured die that carries both the relief geometry and the foil-transfer surface in one pass. The setup cost is higher than a single operation but the visual result is significantly more premium.

Does foil survive rubbing and handling?

Modern hot-stamp foils are formulated for abrasion resistance. On business cards and notebook covers, the foil survives normal handling and pocket carry without flaking. On book spines and covers that see heavy hand contact, we recommend an overprint varnish over the foil for added protection.

Can you foil on dark substrates?

Yes — gold, silver, copper and holographic foils read clearly on dark substrates. Pigmented foils on dark substrates may need a white underbase print first to keep the colour true; we confirm at the proof stage.

Request a foil stamping quote

Send us the substrate (paper stock, leatherette, leather, PU), quantity, foil colour and the deadline. If you have vector artwork, attach it; if not, we will quote against a description and refine at the proof stage.
