ESG disclosure — merch for sustainability reporting

Merch program with full traceability for ESG disclosure under TCFD, SASB, GRI, NOM-035, ISO 14001 and SBTi frameworks: materials declaration, carbon footprint, recycling certificates, fair trade, returnable packaging. Auditable operation with documentary evidence.

When to use this playbook

Companies reporting sustainability under frameworks like TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures), SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board), GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), NOM-035 (Mexican psychosocial-risk standard), ISO 14001 (environmental management), ISO 26000 (social responsibility), SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative), CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Index), MSCI ESG, Sustainalytics, FTSE Russell ESG and the UN Global Compact Principles need to document the environmental, social and governance (ESG) impact of all their operations, including merch.

Merch appears in ESG disclosure in three dimensions. Environmental: materials used, recyclability, carbon footprint, certifications (FSC for paper, GOTS for organic cotton, GRS for recycled, OEKO-TEX for absence of harmful substances, Fair Trade for fair trade, B Corp, Climate Neutral, Carbon Neutral). Social: supplier labour conditions, fair trade, gender and diversity of the production team, community contribution. Governance: origin traceability, fiscal compliance, delivery evidence, transparency.

This playbook applies to Mexican public companies listed on Bolsa Mexicana de Valores that report under CNBV ASG disclosure rules, to multinational companies with operations in Mexico that consolidate ESG at headquarters, to private companies that voluntarily adopt ESG frameworks under investor pressure (private equity, ESG-focused venture capital, family offices), to family businesses in generational transition and to large corporates publishing annual sustainability reports.

What problem it solves

The typical merch of Mexican companies reporting ESG comes from informal suppliers without traceability, virgin non-recycled materials, single-use plastic packaging, uncalculated carbon footprint, unaudited labour conditions and incomplete photographic evidence. When the ESG auditor or investor asks, the typical answer is "we don't have the data" or "we'll investigate". This playbook prevents that situation by designing the program from the start with the traceability disclosure requires.

The playbook also reduces greenwashing risk. Claims of "eco-friendly", "sustainable", "green", "carbon neutral" without third-party certification are increasingly flagged by PROFECO and the Federal Consumer Protection Law. A program with verifiable certifications (GOTS, GRS, OEKO-TEX, Fair Trade, FSC, B Corp, Climate Neutral, Carbon Neutral) protects the company from these observations.

ESG program phases

Phase 1 — Diagnosis and baseline

  • Inventory of prior-year merch program: SKUs, materials, suppliers, MOQ, cost.
  • Baseline carbon footprint calculation per SKU (scopes 1, 2 and 3 when applicable).
  • Mapping of available certifications per supplier (FSC, GOTS, GRS, OEKO-TEX, Fair Trade).
  • Identification of quick wins: pieces that can switch to recycled material at low cost.

Phase 2 — ESG program design

  • Selection of recycled, organic, certified or low-impact materials for each SKU.
  • Recyclable, compostable or returnable packaging per application.
  • Suppliers with verifiable certifications and audited labour conditions.
  • ESG communication: verifiable claims, certificates visible on piece or packaging, QR code to disclosure.

Phase 3 — Production with traceability

  • Production with batch tracking including material origin, supplier, date, batch.
  • Per-batch photo evidence: material, process, packaging, finished product.
  • Supplier-signed declaration on certifications, labour conditions, origin.
  • Carbon footprint calculation per batch and offset via Climate Neutral or certified carbon credits.

Phase 4 — Delivery and evidence

  • Delivery with carriers reporting emissions (DHL GoGreen, FedEx EarthSmart).
  • Delivery evidence with photo and signature when applicable.
  • LFPDPPP compliance for recipient data handling.
  • Return packaging on collectible or premium pieces.

Phase 5 — Disclosure and report

  • Evidence compilation for ESG report: materials, certifications, footprint, conditions.
  • Aggregate impact calculation: kg recycled material, kg CO2 avoided, litres water saved.
  • Narrative for sustainability report aligned to TCFD, SASB, GRI or applicable framework.
  • External audit of merch component when disclosure requires it.

Roles and responsibilities

The client brings: the Chief Sustainability Officer or Sustainability Director that coordinates ESG disclosure, the communications team that validates claims, the procurement team that selects certified suppliers, finance that approves budget and considers total cost including certifications, legal that validates PROFECO and LFPC compliance, and the internal or external audit area that verifies traceability. Corp-Merch brings: an ESG merch methodology with catalogue of certified pieces, a network of suppliers with verifiable certifications, carbon footprint calculation per SKU and per batch, photographic and documentary evidence per batch, supplier-signed declaration, optional carbon offset and narrative for sustainability report.

The Corp-Merch team works in coordination with the client's Chief Sustainability Officer throughout the cycle: from program design to evidence compilation for disclosure. This coordination lets merch integrate naturally into the ESG report rather than being a last-minute appendix.

Timeline template — twelve weeks

  • Weeks 1-2: baseline diagnosis, carbon footprint calculation, supplier mapping.
  • Week 3: ESG program design, materials and certifications selection.
  • Weeks 4-6: production with traceability and photo evidence.
  • Weeks 7-8: quality control, ESG packaging, certified carriers.
  • Weeks 9-10: delivery to recipients, delivery evidence.
  • Weeks 11-12: evidence compilation, disclosure narrative, optional audit.

KPIs to track

  • % of SKUs with certified recycled or organic material (target growing year over year).
  • Kg of CO2 avoided or offset per program (target growing).
  • % of SKUs with verifiable certification (GOTS, GRS, OEKO-TEX, Fair Trade, FSC).
  • % of suppliers with signed labour-conditions declaration (target 100%).
  • Verified ESG claims compliance by external auditor (target 100%).
