Textile screen printing for the auto industry: technique and compliance

Textile screen printing is the most-used personalization technique in the Mexican auto industry for three operational reasons. First is per-piece cost on large runs: with a well-calibrated screen press, a single-color front print on a cotton polo starts at $35 MXN before VAT, while embroidery starts at $85 MXN and DTF at $95 MXN. On runs of 5,000 to 50,000 pieces screen printing wins on both cost and speed. Second is industrial-wash durability: properly cured plastisol (160°C for 15 seconds) resists more than 100 cycles in industrial washing at 60°C without visible color or adhesion degradation, while DTF starts degrading after cycle 75 in industrial washing. Third is substrate versatility: screen printing works on 100% cotton, cotton-poly blends, 100% polyester, dry-fit, fleece, sweatshirt and denim, while embroidery only works on textiles with a weave that allows the needle to penetrate.

Corp-Merch.com.mx has run textile screen printing for the Mexican auto industry since 2018. We started by printing polos for a wiring-harness plant in the Querétaro Industrial Park; today we print polos for Start-of-Production events at BMW San Luis Potosí, VW Puebla, Toyota Guanajuato, KIA Pesquería, GM Silao, Nissan Aguascalientes, Mazda Salamanca, Honda El Salto, Stellantis Saltillo, Audi México and Hyundai; polos for the admin staff of Tier 1 suppliers (Bosch, Continental, ZF, Magna, Lear, Aptiv, Valeo, Mahle, Denso, Aisin); hoodies for warehouse and maintenance staff with NOM-018-STPS-2015 compliance (safety colors); and polos for CSR campaigns with GOTS-certified water-based ink. For European-HQ customers (BMW, Audi, Continental, Bosch, ZF) we use REACH-compliant phthalate-free and heavy-metal-free plastisol; for American-HQ customers (GM, Ford, Stellantis ex-FCA) we use standard plastisol with CPSC and FDA compliance when material contacts food.

Most-used screen-printing techniques in auto

Plastisol screen printing

Industry-standard ink, PVC base with plasticizers, cured at 160°C for 15 seconds. Opaque slightly raised finish, high industrial-wash durability (more than 100 cycles at 60°C), excellent reproduction of flat colors and halftones, full Pantone Coated chart available. For the auto industry: REACH-compliant phthalate-free and heavy-metal-free plastisol when the customer has European HQ; standard plastisol for American-HQ customers. Runs starting at 500 pieces, 7 to 12 business days lead time, per-piece cost in MXN with VAT broken out.

Water-based screen printing

Water-based pigment ink, cured at 150°C for 90 seconds. Soft finish that blends into the fabric, almost imperceptible to the touch, ideal for CSR programs and corporate sustainability campaigns. For the auto industry: used in CSR campaigns with GOTS-certified organic cotton, in shirts for plant family events, in industrial-safety programs with NOM-018-STPS-2015 compliance (when combined with hi-visibility ink), and in shirts for event staff. Runs starting at 500 pieces, 10 to 15 business days lead time, per-piece cost in MXN with VAT broken out, slightly more expensive than plastisol.

High-density screen printing

Special high-viscosity plastisol ink applied in thick layers to create three-dimensional relief. Touchable relief finish, premium effect on corporate gift polos, VIP events and plant anniversary gifts. For the auto industry: used on plant anniversary polos, staff polos for SOP events, sweatshirts for trade-show staff at INA PAACE Automechanika, EXPOMAQ, Industrial Transformation México, ANTAD and Salón del Automóvil. Runs starting at 250 pieces, 12 to 18 business days lead time, per-piece cost in MXN with VAT broken out, 30% to 50% more expensive than standard plastisol.

Hi-visibility screen printing (NOM-018)

Fluorescent orange or yellow hi-visibility ink, cured at 160°C for 15 seconds. NOM-018-STPS-2015 compliance for safety colors and signage. For the auto industry: used on shirts, vests and hoodies for warehouse, maintenance, internal logistics, forklift and yard staff. Runs starting at 200 pieces, 7 to 12 business days lead time, per-piece cost in MXN with VAT broken out. We validate compliance with the customer's safety team before closing the order.

When to choose screen printing, embroidery or DTF for auto

The choice between screen printing, embroidery and DTF for the auto industry depends on five variables. First, volume: screen printing wins from 500 pieces onward (per-piece cost drops significantly above 1,000); embroidery wins from 50 to 2,000 pieces; DTF wins from 50 to 1,000 pieces. Second, industrial-wash durability: screen printing with plastisol wins (more than 100 cycles at 60°C); embroidery wins absolutely (no wash degradation, only thread wear); DTF loses (75 cycles before visible degradation). Third, design detail: screen printing wins for vector designs with flat colors and halftones; embroidery wins for logos with small text; DTF wins for full-color designs with gradients, shadows and photographic effects. Fourth, substrate: screen printing wins on cotton, cotton-poly blends, 100% polyester, dry-fit, fleece and denim; embroidery wins on textiles with a weave that allows the needle to penetrate; DTF wins on 100% polyester and dry-fit, loses on pure cotton. Fifth, finish: screen printing deposits a slightly raised layer; embroidery deposits three-dimensional relief; matte DTF deposits a thin flexible layer.

Operational recommendations for the auto industry: when the customer wants shop-floor uniforms with a single-color logo, REACH-compliant plastisol screen printing is the most economical and durable option. When the customer wants shop-floor uniforms with a single-color logo + small text (badge number), embroidery is the most durable option. When the customer wants shop-floor uniforms with a full-color logo with gradients, DTF is the only viable option. When the customer wants admin polos with a left-chest embroidered logo, 6,000-stitch embroidery is the standard. When the customer wants SOP or plant anniversary polos with a premium design, high-density is the most eye-catching option. When the customer wants CSR polos with GOTS-certified organic cotton, water-based ink is the most coherent choice with the sustainability message. For hybrid combinations we recommend chest embroidery + back screen print, or back DTF + chest embroidery.

Pricing, MOQ and turnaround — auto screen printing

All prices in MXN before VAT. 16% VAT broken out on CFDI 4.0. Foreign-resident recipients trigger ISR withholding under Article 161 of the LISR. MOQ starts at 500 pieces for single-front plastisol; 250 pieces for high-density; 500 pieces for water-based. Runs of 5,000+ pieces unlock volume pricing and an annual calendar with quarterly commitment. Lead times: 7 to 12 business days for one or two-color plastisol; 10 to 15 business days for water-based; 12 to 18 business days for high-density; 3 to 5 business days for rush restocks at +30%. Consolidated delivery to assembly plant or Tier 1 supplier with inbound appointment, CFDI and Carta Porte presentation to accounts payable, and security staff coordination for site access.

For Start of Production, plant anniversaries or IATF 16949 audits we book a window with HR or the plant director 30 to 60 days ahead of the date and ship 3 to 5 days early so the compliance team has time to label each uniform with the badge number and file the CFDI copy in the employee file.

FAQ — auto screen printing

What's the minimum MOQ for screen printing?

MOQ starts at 500 pieces for single-front plastisol; 250 pieces for high-density; 500 pieces for water-based. For smaller runs (50–250 pieces) we recommend embroidery or DTF because screen calibration cost doesn't amortize.

Do you comply with REACH for European customers?

Yes. We use REACH-compliant (EU Regulation 1907/2006) phthalate-free and heavy-metal-free plastisol for European-HQ customers (BMW, Audi, Continental, Bosch, ZF). The compliance certificate ships with the lot when the customer requests it for REACH audits.

How durable is plastisol screen printing?

With properly cured plastisol (160°C for 15 seconds), screen printing resists more than 100 cycles in industrial washing at 60°C without visible color or adhesion degradation. We recommend validating the industrial-washing protocol with the customer when the use is in auto plants with on-site laundry or third-party service.

Can you combine screen print + embroidery on the same garment?

Yes. Left-chest 6,000-stitch embroidery + back single-color or two-color screen print is a typical combo for auto plant uniforms. Embroidery runs first (more wash-resistant), screen print goes on second. Runs starting at 200 pieces with 14 to 21 business days lead time, per-piece cost in MXN with VAT broken out.

Do you invoice with the Carta Porte complement under IMMEX?

Yes. We add Carta Porte 3.0 when freight crosses state lines or the border on the same delivery day. XML and PDF stay on file for seven years per Article 30 of the CFF and we hand over the temporary-export pedimento copy when the customer operates under IMMEX.
