Mug technical data sheet for corporate drinkware programs

This page collects the technical specifications for the mug and tumbler categories we run most frequently in corporate merch programs. It covers ceramic, vitreous enamel, stainless steel and borosilicate glass, the decoration techniques that work on each, the dishwasher and microwave safety ratings, and the minimum order quantities per technique. It is written for procurement teams who need to compare mug options before requesting a sample.

Why drinkware needs a separate spec sheet from apparel

Mugs and tumblers look like a simple category until you start producing them. The shape of the printable area is curved, which makes screen print alignment harder than on flat apparel. The substrate behaves differently under heat — ceramic tolerates the kiln temperature for sublimation coating, but stainless steel needs a polymer coating to accept the sublimation transfer. The dishwasher rating is not just a feature; in the United States, California Proposition 65 requires a specific disclosure if a decorated mug contains lead or cadmium above the threshold, and corporate clients in California will ask about it.

So the spec sheet becomes the place where all those constraints sit before the sample arrives. If a client tells us they need a microwave-safe mug with a full-colour Pantone-matched logo that survives 500 dishwasher cycles, we know immediately which model to recommend and which decoration technique to use. If the client gets the same answer only after the sample arrives, the program costs them a week and a re-approval cycle.

Four mug families we run most frequently

Ceramic — 330 ml standard, 11 oz wall thickness

AA-grade vitrified ceramic, lead-free and cadmium-free glaze. Microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe up to 800 cycles. Sublimation coating pre-applied for full-colour prints. Pad print for spot colour logos up to 4 colours. Screen print for runs above 500 units per design. Pantone matching within Delta E 3 on sublimation and Delta E 2 on screen print.

Vitreous enamel — 350 ml camping mug

Steel core with vitreous enamel coating, finished with a stainless steel rim. Lightweight, shatter-resistant, suitable for outdoor and hospitality programs. Sublimation on a white enamel patch, screen print directly on the coloured body. Not microwave-safe; dishwasher-safe up to 400 cycles.

Stainless steel tumbler — 480 ml double wall

18/8 food-grade stainless steel, double-wall vacuum insulation, keeps cold drinks cold for 12 hours and hot drinks hot for 6 hours. Polymer coating for sublimation or laser engraving. Not microwave-safe. Dishwasher-safe on the top rack only; hand wash recommended to preserve the print. Pantone coverage on sublimation within Delta E 3.

Borosilicate glass — 350 ml glass mug

Heat-resistant glass for tea and specialty coffee programs. Sublimation on a white ceramic patch fused to the glass, or laser etching directly on the glass body. Microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe up to 600 cycles. Higher unit cost than ceramic; favoured for premium hospitality programs and luxury brand activations.

Decoration compatibility by mug family

Sublimation is the dominant technique for ceramic and borosilicate glass because it produces vibrant full-colour prints with photographic detail. The mug is coated with a polymer layer, the transfer paper is wrapped around the mug and clamped, and the assembly is heated in a mug press at 200 degrees Celsius for 90 seconds. The colour bonds with the polymer and does not peel or fade under normal washing conditions. Pad printing is the right choice for spot-colour logos on dark-coloured mugs — up to four colours per pass, accurate Pantone matching within Delta E 2.

Laser engraving is reserved for stainless steel tumblers and for borosilicate glass where the design is meant to be a frosted etching rather than a coloured print. The laser removes the top polymer coating on stainless steel, revealing the bare metal underneath; on glass, the laser creates a micro-fracture pattern that appears as a soft frosted image. Laser engraving is durable beyond any dishwasher cycle and is the right choice for premium recognition gifts and engraved executive sets.

Screen print on ceramic works for runs above 500 units per design and is the most cost-effective technique for high-volume corporate giveaways. Each colour is a separate screen; setup fees are amortized across the run, so the per-unit cost drops sharply at 1,000 units and above. We do not run screen print on dark mugs because the ink does not cover well; for dark mugs, sublimation on a white-coated panel is the standard approach.

Minimum order quantities and lead times

Sublimation on ceramic starts at 25 units per design with a 5 to 7 business-day production lead time after artwork approval. Pad print starts at 100 units per design and runs in 7 to 10 business days. Screen print on ceramic starts at 500 units per design and runs in 12 to 15 business days. Laser engraving on stainless steel tumblers starts at 25 units per design with a 7 to 10 business-day lead time. For corporate gifts with individual name engraving, we charge a setup fee per name and a per-unit engraving fee; this is the right approach for recognition awards but not for mass giveaways.

For US-bound shipments, every decorated mug carries a California Prop 65 compliance disclosure on the packaging when lead or cadmium levels cross the threshold. Our standard mug programme keeps both below the threshold; if you require Prop 65 documentation for a specific program, we issue a laboratory test certificate from an accredited Mexican lab on request, at a per-batch fee.

Packaging, gift boxes and kitting

Standard packaging is a single mug per carton mailer with a corrugated insert; this is the right packaging for direct-to-employee fulfilment and for trade-show giveaway volumes. For corporate gift boxes, we offer a rigid two-piece cardboard box with a foam insert, suitable for one mug plus an optional tea bag, coffee sachet or branded card. Gift boxes start at 50 units per SKU and add 5 to 7 business days to the production lead time.

For executive recognition kits, we combine a mug with a notebook, a pen and a branded card in a magnetic-closure rigid box. The kitting happens in our workshop in Estado de México; we photograph each finished kit before it ships. For recurring recognition programs running four times a year, we hold a buffer stock of the empty gift boxes and the mugs, and we replenish them on a 30-day rolling forecast that the client's HR team provides.

FAQ — mug technical sheet

What is the dishwasher-safe rating for each mug family?

Ceramic and borosilicate glass mugs survive 600 to 800 dishwasher cycles on the top rack. Vitreous enamel mugs survive 400 cycles. Stainless steel tumblers survive 500 cycles on the top rack; we recommend hand washing to preserve the sublimation print. Dishwasher ratings are tested against EN 12875-1 and EN 12875-2 European standards.

Can you print inside the mug rim or on the handle?

Inside-rim printing is available on ceramic and stainless steel models; it is a four-colour process that adds 2 business days to the lead time and a per-unit surcharge. Handle printing is available on selected ceramic models and is screen-printed only.

Do you supply mugs with anti-fingerprint or soft-touch finishes?

Yes. Soft-touch powder coating is available on stainless steel tumblers in black, navy, white and brand-matched Pantone colours. Anti-fingerprint coating is standard on our premium tumbler line and adds 1 business day to the lead time.

How do you handle CFDI 4.0 invoicing for mug orders?

Each delivery wave is invoiced separately with a CFDI 4.0 stamped by SAT, including IVA 16% desglosado, customs code for cross-border shipments when applicable, and the SAT product key. We deliver the stamped XML and PDF to your accounts-payable team within 24 hours of the physical delivery.

Can we supply our own mug blanks for decoration only?

Yes, with a customer-supplied blank agreement. We charge decoration-only pricing plus a 10 percent handling fee for inspection, blank rejection of damaged units, and re-bagging. Lead times for customer-supplied blanks depend on the arrival schedule of the blanks at our workshop.
