ESG report
How to prepare a merch sustainability report that actually passes an audit
A guide for ESG, sustainability, marketing and procurement teams reporting the environmental and social impact of their merch programmes in Mexico. How to document materials, certifications, logistics and waste to align with the Ley General de Cambio Climatico, NOM-141 on recycled content and the GRI and SASB frameworks, without falling into greenwashing or claims PROFECO can sanction.
Why the sustainability report is not a communications piece
The most common mistake is confusing the sustainability report with a communications brochure. The brochure tells a story; the report gets audited. The difference is that every claim in the report must have verifiable documentary evidence, and that evidence must survive the cross-check of an external auditor, a PROFECO visit or a question from an investigative journalist. Corp-Merch.MX works with ESG teams across CDMX, Monterrey and Guadalajara, and the first job we do together is to separate what is communicable from what is documentable.
The Mexican regulatory framework for sustainability includes the Ley General de Cambio Climatico (LGCC), the Ley General del Equilibrio Ecologico y la Proteccion al Ambiente (LGEEPA), NOM-141 on recycled content and NOM-004 on textile labelling. Additionally, the international commitments Mexico has signed — Paris Agreements, TCFD, the UN Sustainable Development Goals — require reporting under standards an external auditor can review. GRI Standards, SASB and the Carbon Disclosure Project framework are the most common in corporate reports of Mexican companies listed on BMV.
Greenwashing is the most expensive risk. PROFECO has sanctioned companies that print "eco", "green", "natural" or "sustainable" on their products without a verification of the claim. The sanction can range from a financial fine to product withdrawal from the market. Corp-Merch.MX does not produce merch with claims without evidence, even if the client asks for it — we prefer to discuss which claim can be documented before risking a sanction.
What an audit-ready sustainability report includes
An audit-ready report has five sections. The first is materials and suppliers: material type per product, recycled content percentage where applicable, supplier certifications (GOTS, GRS, OEKO-TEX, FSC, PEFC), country of origin and transport distance. The second is energy and emissions: kilowatt-hours consumed in production, emission factor of the Mexican electricity grid according to CRE, and carbon offset where applicable.
The third is water and waste: litres consumed in dyeing and finishing, wastewater management, percentage of waste reused, recycled or disposed as hazardous waste. The fourth is logistics: kilometres travelled per shipment, transport mode (land, air, rail), emission factor per mode, and load optimisation. The fifth is social impact: workshop personnel conditions, living wage, overtime, and safety protocols.
Corp-Merch.MX delivers this documentation as a sustainability dossier — a PDF file with all certificates, energy invoices, waste manifests and logistics reports. The dossier is delivered to the client with each merch run and is archived for five years for audit purposes.
Steps to prepare the report
- Define the report scope before the first production. Does the report cover a complete programme, a specific run or only a part? Corp-Merch.MX recommends aligning the scope with the company's ESG reporting cycle — annual, quarterly or per campaign.
- Identify supplier certifications per material. Each material (cotton, polyester, paper, cardboard) carries its certification. Corp-Merch.MX delivers a catalogue with available certifications per product before the pre-order.
- Document energy and emissions per production batch. Kilowatt-hours consumed, grid emission factor by region (CENACE), and offset if purchased. Corp-Merch.MX reports per workshop and per run.
- Document water and waste per product. Litres consumed in dyeing, wastewater management (WWTP, discharge to municipal network), kilograms of waste by type and final disposal. Corp-Merch.MX requests the workshop manifest for runs above 1,000 pieces.
- Document logistics with emission factor per mode. Kilometres per shipment, transport mode, emission factor and offset. Corp-Merch.MX suggests land mode when time allows because it emits 60 % less than air.
- Report the workshop social impact. Labour conditions, wage, overtime, safety. Corp-Merch.MX shares the workshop record with its personnel policy when the client requests it.
- Verify communication claims against evidence. Every claim published on social channels, packaging or press release must have documentary evidence. PROFECO and NOM-141 do not forgive claims without verification.
- Archive the dossier for five years. Corp-Merch.MX delivers the PDF dossier with all supporting evidence. The client archives it in its ESG management system to respond to BMV, CNBV or external audit reviews.
Common mistakes that invalidate the report
- Reporting recycled content without certificate. The claim "30 % recycled cotton" without GRS or RCS certificate is sanctionable by PROFECO.
- Using absolute terms. "100 % ecological", "zero emissions", "carbon neutral" are claims that require third-party evidence. Without it, they do not get printed.
- Reporting carbon offset without verifying the programme. Offsets from non-verified projects do not count for a GRI report or for SASB.
- Confusing consolidated logistics with efficient logistics. A consolidation reduces kilometres per piece but if the origin is far, the total footprint can be higher than several local short shipments.
- Forgetting NOM-141 on recyclable claims. A recyclable product requires documentary evidence that the material is effectively recyclable in Mexico, not just theoretically.
- Reporting the workshop as own. Corp-Merch.MX is an independent workshop; in the ESG report the client reports Corp-Merch.MX's operation as a supplier, not as own.

FAQ — sustainability report
Does Corp-Merch.MX issue a signed ESG report?
Corp-Merch.MX delivers the documentary dossier. The final ESG report is issued and signed by the client based on its own management systems. Corp-Merch does not sign the client's report because it is not the issuer of the corporate report.
Are GOTS and GRS certifications valid in Mexico?
Yes, they are international certifications recognised in Mexico for organic and recycled textiles. Corp-Merch.MX works with suppliers that maintain both certifications current.
Can you offset the entire carbon footprint of my run?
Yes, with a verified offset programme. Corp-Merch.MX recommends programmes with Gold Standard or VCS verification. The offset is invoiced separately.
Does NOM-141 apply to all merch products?
It applies to products that make claims of recycled, recyclable or biodegradable content. Corp-Merch.MX verifies NOM-141 before accepting any claim on artwork or packaging.
