Decoration comparison on gadgets and metal items

Pad printing vs UV printing on merch — which technique fits your program

Pad printing and UV digital printing are the two techniques dominating custom decoration on metal and plastic gadgets in Mexico: keychains, premium pens, USB drives, power banks, tumblers, bottles and presentation boxes. Pad printing transfers flat ink from a cliché through a silicone pad — it is the classic analog technique, affordable and repeatable. UV digital printing (UV DTF or direct-to-object UV LED) cures ink with ultraviolet light layer by layer, and can reproduce full-color images, photos and gradients directly on the substrate without contact. This page compares both techniques with concrete numbers in MXN for runs of 50, 250 and 1 000 units, and explains when each is right based on substrate, design and volume.

Why the pad vs UV decision matters

The pad vs UV digital decision shifts five dimensions of a merch program: final unit cost, profitable MOQ, reproducible colors, compatible substrates and finished product perception. Pad printing produces opaque spot colors from an etched cliché; it covers 80 % of metal and plastic gadget programs in Mexico because its unit cost is low and it adapts to curved surfaces. UV digital produces full-color CMYK images with no cliché, but the equipment is more expensive (50 000 – 200 000 USD per printer), which keeps its unit cost higher on small runs.

Pad printing uses liquid ink transferred by a silicone pad, normally cures at 80 – 120 °C, and produces solid opaque Pantone colors. Each additional color requires a new cliché (280 – 480 MXN) and an additional pad pass. UV printing uses ink cured by ultraviolet light, applied through an inkjet head that scans the surface, and produces full-color images (CMYK) with optional white ink to opacify on dark or transparent substrates. UV can reproduce photos, gradients, color illustrations and complex logos that pad printing cannot.

The practical rule we apply in most Mexican programs: pad printing when the logo is one to four spot colors, the run is medium to large (250+ units) and the substrate is metal, ABS plastic, varnished wood or leather. UV printing when the logo is full color, has gradients, photos or more than four colors, the run is short to medium (50 – 500 units) and the substrate is flat or slightly curved. When the program combines both needs (flat logo on one face, photo on another), both techniques are used on the same product, with an additional setup cost.

When pad printing is the right call

Pad printing is the right call when the logo is a vector graphic with one to four spot colors and an exact Pantone match is required (the typical brand identity manual case), when the run is medium to large (250+ units) and when the substrate has curvature — cylindrical keychains, curved pens, rounded bottle bodies, USB caps. The cliché investment amortizes quickly because each additional color costs 280 – 480 MXN but is spread across all units. Pad printing is the dominant technique in Mexican trade show metal gadget programs.

Pad printing is also right when the finished look must be "premium" without relief and the ink must be opaque on a dark substrate color. A white or yellow logo on a black USB drive or black metal keychain is achieved consistently with high-opacity pad printing, while UV digital would require a white layer plus CMYK that costs more and sometimes does not match the coverage. Durability to everyday use (key scratches, bag knocks) is high because the ink cured at 80 – 120 °C bonds to the substrate.

When UV digital printing is the right call

UV digital printing is the right call when the logo is full color, includes photos, complex illustrations or gradients that pad printing cannot reproduce. It is the right technique for programs where each unit carries a different image (individual names on USB drives, unique QR codes on keychains for raffles, consecutive numbers on awards). It is also the right call on very short runs (50 – 100 units) where the cost of pad printing clichés does not amortize, or when the design needs to change between orders without replacing tooling.

UV digital is especially useful when the substrate is flat or slightly curved and the image needs to opacify over dark colors. The UV printer's white ink creates an opaque base layer on top of which CMYK is printed, allowing reproduction of vivid colors on black, red or deep blue surfaces. In premium presentation programs — gift boxes with photo, corporate plaques with portrait, recognition plates — UV digital delivers results pad printing cannot match. The main limitations are the print area (max 30 × 30 cm on standard equipment) and higher unit cost on large runs.

Recommendation by program type

For trade shows and conferences with metal gadgets and a flat logo (keychains, pens, USB drives, bottle openers): one- or two-color pad printing on the product body. This is the standard combination in the Mexican trade show industry.

For premium welcome kits that carry the logo on one face and personalized text on another: pad printing for the logo + UV digital for the personalized text (employee name, serial number). The combination is scheduled as one project and ships in 7 – 10 business days.

For recognition awards and plaques with the honoree photo: full-color UV digital on wood or acrylic plaque. The technique reproduces the photo with photographic quality and cures instantly.

For raffle or unique-code programs on keychains and tokens: UV digital with consecutive number and QR code. Each unit carries a different number or QR, without needing to swap clichés between units.

FAQ — pad vs UV printing

Which is cheaper per unit?

Pad printing is cheaper on large runs (250+) when the logo is one to three spot colors. UV digital is cheaper on short runs (50 – 100 units) when cliché cost becomes relevant.

Which reproduces photos and gradients best?

Only UV digital reproduces photos, gradients and color illustrations with photographic quality. Pad printing only produces opaque spot colors.

Can I combine pad and UV on the same product?

Yes, and it is common practice in premium kits. Pad printing personalizes one face (brand logo) and UV personalizes another (recipient name). The program is scheduled as two production steps in the same flow.
