Sustainability data 2026: which metrics to report in a corporate merch programme in Mexico
In 2026 sustainability reporting on merch programmes stopped being a good intention statement and became an audit input. Corp-Merch.MX works with Mexican corporate clients that already report to CSRD, the SEC Climate Rule, the BMV TCFD guidance and the LFPDPPP, and they need comparable year over year data. This guide covers the five metrics Corp-Merch.MX is reporting in 2026 for clients across retail, financial services, FMCG and technology with operations in CDMX, Monterrey and Guadalajara: recycled content share, chain of custody kilometres, kgCO2e per delivered unit, supplier certifications and batch traceability. Every metric is audited against documentary evidence that Corp-Merch.MX keeps for five years.
Why old sustainability KPIs no longer cut it
Up to 2023 most corporate clients asked their merch suppliers for two sustainability KPIs: recycled material share and FSC certification on paper. Corp-Merch.MX delivered both in a PDF at the close of the project and the client attached it to the annual report. That practice fell short. The main reason is that regulatory frameworks — CSRD in the EU with effect on Mexican subsidiaries of European corporates, the SEC Climate Rule in the US with effect on listed companies, the TCFD recommendations adopted by the BMV, and the LFPDPPP with its non-financial reporting guidance — demand Scope 3 data with project level granularity and batch traceability, not an aggregated statement.
Corp-Merch.MX has seen that the clients that navigate the new reporting environment best are the ones that treat merch as an audited Scope 3 line, with comparable year over year data and documentary evidence behind every figure. That means: for every order a technical sheet is built with material, origin, transport kilometres, water and energy use at finishing, estimated kgCO2e and supplier certifications. The sheet is signed by the supplier and by Corp-Merch.MX, and is delivered to the client together with the CFDI 4.0 invoice.
The cost of running this framework is 1.5% to 3% on top of the programme budget, mostly for evidence collection time, supplier audits and document storage. Corp-Merch.MX recommends the client approves this premium as part of the annual plan, not case by case, because evidence collection gets more expensive when it is done after the fact to answer an auditor.
Five metrics Corp-Merch.MX reports in 2026
1. Recycled and renewable material share
Corp-Merch.MX reports the weight share of post-consumer recycled (PCR), pre-consumer recycled (PIR) and renewable origin material (organic cotton, sugarcane, bamboo). The calculation is done by category — apparel, drinkware, paper, electronics — and by supplier. Corp-Merch.MX works with suppliers that issue a signed composition declaration and, when applicable, with GRS (Global Recycled Standard) or RCS (Recycled Claim Standard) certification. The metric is delivered in an auditable spreadsheet.
2. Transport kilometres and mode per batch
Corp-Merch.MX reports the transport kilometres per batch, broken down by mode (air, sea, road) and by origin to destination. The metric is built from shipment documentation (BL, AWB, carta porte) and cross-referenced with the carbon footprint factors per mode published by DEFRA and the EPA. Corp-Merch.MX prioritises sea and road over air for legs over 1,500 km, and reports the chosen mode on every order technical sheet.
3. kgCO2e per delivered unit (Scope 3, categories 1 and 4)
Corp-Merch.MX calculates the carbon footprint per delivered unit using emission factors by material, by finishing energy and by transport. The methodology follows the GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard, categories 1 (purchased goods and services) and 4 (upstream transport). Corp-Merch.MX delivers the figure in kgCO2e per unit, aggregated by programme and comparable year over year, together with the auditable calculation sheet and the emission factors used.
4. Supplier and product certifications
Corp-Merch.MX maintains a catalogue of supplier and product certifications and reports which apply to each order. The most frequent certifications are: GRS, RCS, FSC, PEFC, OCS (Organic Content Standard), GOTS when applicable, ISO 14001 at plant, and SA8000 or equivalent social responsibility. Corp-Merch.MX verifies the validity of every certification against the certifier database and attaches the proof to the technical sheet.
5. Batch traceability and chain of custody
Corp-Merch.MX reports batch traceability — for each order the raw material supplier, production lot, manufacturing date, finishing supplier and delivery date to the final client are documented. The traceability is kept in an encrypted document repository for five years and is delivered to the client when an auditor asks. Corp-Merch.MX also reports the chain of custody when the material is certified — for example organic cotton with chain of custody from the field to the finished tee.
How Corp-Merch.MX rolls out the ESG dashboard with a new client
For a new client, Corp-Merch.MX starts with a one week workshop that aligns the dashboard metrics with the regulatory frameworks that apply to the client (CSRD, SEC, TCFD, LFPDPPP, internal ISO 14001). With that the dashboard is configured in an auditable spreadsheet and an ESG reporting annex is signed into the master contract. Corp-Merch.MX delivers the first dashboard at the close of the first order, refines it through the next two, and stabilises from the fourth order as a comparable reference.
The dashboard is invoiced as an annual service inside the planning contract. Corp-Merch.MX recommends a quarterly review of the dashboard with the client sustainability team to bring in new regulatory metrics, refresh emission factors and validate traceability of new suppliers. The review is invoiced as a half day technical consulting block.
Frequent questions on merch sustainability data
Which regulatory framework applies to my merch programme in Mexico?
It depends on the client structure. Mexican subsidiaries of European corporates fall under CSRD; companies listed in the US fall under the SEC Climate Rule; companies listed on the BMV follow the adopted TCFD recommendations; all of them fall under the LFPDPPP non-financial reporting chapter. Corp-Merch.MX recommends a case-by-case regulatory analysis at the start of the programme.
How do you validate that a supplier really holds a certification?
Corp-Merch.MX verifies each certification against the certifier public database (GRS, RCS, FSC, PEFC, OCS) and keeps the verification proof. For ISO 14001 and SA8000 Corp-Merch.MX asks for a copy of the valid certificate and checks the scope and expiry date. Corp-Merch.MX does not accept verbal declarations from suppliers.
Does Corp-Merch.MX issue the ESG technical sheet with CFDI 4.0?
Yes. The ESG technical sheet is issued as a complement to the CFDI 4.0, with composition, transport kilometres, kgCO2e and certifications. The sheet is digitally signed by Corp-Merch.MX and the supplier, and is delivered to the client with the electronic invoice.
Let us build your 2026 ESG dashboard
If your team needs to report sustainability from a merch programme at batch granularity, comparable year over year and auditable, let us talk. We need a description of the programme (categories, volumes, applicable regulatory frameworks), a list of current suppliers and the deadline for the first report. With that we issue a four week ESG dashboard proposal, quoted in MXN with CFDI 4.0 and supplier signed technical sheet.
