Hotel merch is two programmes, not one

A hotel property in Mexico runs two very different merch tracks at the same time. The first is live-in employee apparel: front-desk uniforms, housekeeping dresses and tunics, F&B shirts, engineering polos, and chef whites. These are worn every day, must align with NOM-035 where the work environment requires it, and need an SKU map that absorbs the constant staff turnover of hospitality.

The second is guest-facing merch: in-room welcome amenities, branded water bottles, slippers, robes, tote bags and small souvenir items that the property either includes in the rate or sells in the gift shop. This track lives on brand book, photography and packaging as much as it does on the merch itself.

Often tied to a master supplier contract for the entire group.

Gift-shop and lobby retail

Higher unit cost, longer lead time. Branded apparel and accessories sold at the property's gift shop, often under a co-brand with a local artisan or producer.

Conference and events kits

Welcome packs for group bookings, weddings and incentive trips held at the property.

Operating realities across Mexican destinations

A group with properties in Cancún, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and CDMX runs four different freight realities. Cancún requires a same-day air or a 24-hour line-haul from a Mérida or CDMX warehouse. Los Cabos runs on a barge and truck schedule from Mazatlán or La Paz. Puerto Vallarta is closer to Guadalajara. CDMX properties take same-day delivery from any local warehouse. Plan the wave plan around each destination, not against it.

Resort properties also have a high-season cadence. December, Semana Santa, summer and the November long weekend drive the inventory plan. Order the high-volume SKUs by mid-November to clear customs and the SAT stamp before the December pause.

Tax notes for hotel merch

Hotel operators in Mexico are Régimen General de Ley and recover the 16% IVA on most merch purchases against their monthly declaración. Items given to guests as in-room amenities are deductible as part of the room's operating cost; items resold in the gift shop require inventory accounting under the IEPS regime where applicable and a separate SKU map. Imported merchandise for guest amenities follows the standard customs path with USMCA paperwork when the goods come from the US or Canada.
