Merch as a conservation and brand tool

A modern Mexican zoo blends three missions: species conservation, environmental education and family entertainment. Merch serves all three. In conservation, shirts and accessories carrying emblematic species (jaguar, Mexican wolf, axolotl, sea turtle, primate) partially fund breeding and reintroduction programs. In education, souvenir kits for schools and notebooks with animal cards are the didactic tool that reaches the classroom. In entertainment, the souvenir store at the end of the trail turns the customer into a brand promoter — the jaguar plush the child carries on their shoulder reminds them of the visit every day.

Mexico has a very diverse zoo ecosystem. Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City, split into its three sections (Chapultepec I, II and III — the last two also known as Alfonso L. Herrera and Miguel Ángel de Quevedo), is the most visited in the country and runs over twelve hundred animals of two hundred species. Africam Safari in Puebla operates a drive-through safari format with fifteen hundred animals on three hundred hectares of natural reserve. Guadalajara Zoo, León Zoo, Morelia Zoological Park, Monterrey Zoo and Culiacán Zoo serve regional markets with captive audiences. Xcaret and Xel-Há in Quintana Roo are theme parks with a wildlife component. Xcaret Aviary, Acuario Inbursa, Acuario de Veracruz, Dolphin Discovery and Acuario Mazatlán complete the marine venue map.

High seasons are Holy Week, summer (July-August) and school bridges. Low seasons are September-October (rainy season and back-to-school) and February (no-vacation week). Production volumes reflect this seasonality: staff uniforms are produced on an annual run with quarterly replenishment; retail souvenirs are run in series that rotate every six months and peak in high season; member kits are run in monthly series for automatic renewal.

CFDI 4.0 invoicing applies to all categories. Zoos with animal-adoption and membership programs issue recurring pre-invoices; on-site stores invoice with public general where applicable and with RFC where the buyer requests it. Projects with authorized donee status (the most common are Africam Safari, Chapultepec and the CDMX-administered zoos, plus several civil associations) issue digital tax receipts for donations.

MOQ, operations and rotation by category

MOQ depends on the product and the process. For shirts and textile souvenirs, we run series of two hundred pieces per design to ensure production feasibility and price. For plush toys, MOQ depends on the mold — custom plush requires upfront investment in matrix and prototype development (fifty to eighty thousand MXN per species), and from there minimum runs of two hundred to five hundred pieces. For small-format souvenirs (magnets, keychains, pins), MOQ is one thousand pieces per design because of die-cut and press setup costs.

Staff uniforms are produced on an annual run with quarterly replenishment. We carry full sizing (XS to XXL, with unisex, women's and men's cuts) and maintain safety stock for replacement on wear. Personalization is usually embroidery with the park badge on the chest and employee name on the sleeve. Colors follow the institutional palette — olive green for animal care, sky blue for education, orange for retail, gray for maintenance.

Member kits are run in monthly or quarterly series depending on the membership calendar. Each kit includes a piece for the species of the month (rotation of twelve to twenty species per year), educational material, sticker or pin, and collectible packaging. Billing is recurring: we issue a pre-invoice at the start of each shipping cycle and the membership renews automatically unless canceled.

For zoos working with authorized-donee status, we issue digital tax receipts for donations (CFD) with donee complement when the donor requires deductibility. We run series with a donor roster and annual renewal of the donee certificate.
